Director, Life Underwriting Policy

Purpose of Job

We are currently seeking talented Director, Life Underwriting Policy for our San Antonio, TX, Phoenix, AZ, Colorado Springs, CO, Tampa, FL, Chesapeake, VA or Remote facility.

Directs a team responsible for the establishment of standardized USAA Life Company underwriting policies and processes. Ensures Life Company operations execute within the scope of company mortality management plans and policies, underwriting guidelines, state regulations and operational underwriting procedures. Directs and coordinates activities associated with underwriting automation in the achievement of assigned goals and objectives.

Job Requirements

  • Directs life and health underwriting policy and programs to achieve operational goals through a team of Principal Underwriters and technology specialists. 
  • Provides oversight and functional advice on adoption and implementation of underwriting technology; monitors performance of implemented rules for accuracy and capacity; and identifies trends and develops action plans to resolve issues.
  • Leads team in coordination of underwriting activities with other Life Company departments, as necessary, to ensure consistent execution against established mortality management policy. 
  • Assists with the reviews of Life Company’s actual mortality and morbidity experience to safeguard long-term mortality and morbidity experience. 
  • Coordinates internal USAA audits as well as Medical Information Bureau, Re-insurance and Regulatory/Compliance Audits.
  • Hires, develops, coaches and evaluates the performance of team members to ensure a high functioning team of underwriting professionals.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert in financial and medical topics related to underwriting and risk assessment by maintaining knowledge of products, programs, guidelines, ratings, regulatory issues, market conditions and competitor information. Conducts training and/or prepares written documentation in field of expertise.
  • Influences cross-functional teams across the enterprise to enable development and execution of a multi-year Underwriting innovation strategy.
  • Provides second signature reviews for any level of underwriter and for all amounts up to and including their maximum designated approval limit.
  • Acts on behalf of the Chief Life Underwriter in his/her absence.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or 4 additional years of related experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted in lieu of a Degree
  • 8 + years of progressive life underwriting experience
  • 3 + years of direct team lead or management experience
  • Appropriate level of Life Approval Authority
  • Associate, Academy of Life Underwriting (AALU) designation

  • 10+ years of progressive life underwriting experience
  • $5,000,000 level of Life Approval Authority
  • Knowledge or familiarity with Automated Life Underwriting (rules engine)
  • Fellow, Academy of Life Underwriting (FALU) designation
  • 5 – 7 years of direct team lead or management experience

***Selected candidates will attend and complete the Management Development School program in San Antonio, TX, during their first six months in position.***
