Senior Attorney - Technology

Purpose of Job

We are currently seeking talented Technology Senior Attorney for our San Antonio, TX Location.

Responsible for providing expert legal counsel to Senior Leaders including Executive Counsel for an operating area or staff agency within USAA. Responds to needs of the business unit by identifying and analyzing complex and unique legal issues and provide resolution for these legal matters. Ensures the company's activities are conducted in compliance with applicable laws. Responsible for identifying and managing legal risk in association with USAA's Risk Appetite and provide strategic direction. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Works independently on matters of significance to the organization and has in-depth, expert knowledge in specific type of law, and/or the proven ability to lead teams to resolve complex issues. May work with outside counsel.

Job Requirements

Competitive candidates will have experience in the following areas:

  • Internet and mobile-related agreements and policies (including social media), payment systems, E-commerce, data transfer/usage, privacy, marketing arrangements, online promotions, and/or mobile development.
  • Working with and advising business clients and engineering teams throughout the product development lifecycle in Internet- and mobile-based platforms to assist the business in delivering optimal member experiences.
  • Practicing as in-house/outside counsel, advising insurance companies, large banks and/or other financial institutions.
  • Collaboration with legal colleagues for input and coordination on novel or complex issues arising from new development efforts (such as blockchain, augmented reality, artificial intelligence), member/customer interactions, and strategic planning.
  • Working on technical matters with ability to comfortably transition between detailed and big-picture work.
  • Providing sound and practical business judgment, intellectual creativity, and problem-solving skills, with an interest in continuous education related to emerging technologies relevant to USAA’s operations.

Minimum Requirements

  • JD from an accredited law school
  • 7+ years-experience practicing law within Technology and Digital arena
  • Admitted to the practice law in one state or a territory of the USA
  • Active member of good standing of the bar in at least one state or territory

  • Ideal candidate will have strong academic credentials and a background working on technical matters with an ability to comfortably transition between detailed and big-picture work.
  • Sound and practical business judgment, intellectual creativity, and problem-solving skills, with an interest in continuous education related to emerging technologies relevant to USAA’s Operations.
