Director, Claims Analytics Innovation

Purpose of Job

We are currently seeking talented Director, Innovation for our San Antonio, TX (WestRidge South) facility.

This role provides advanced analytics support to the P&C Claims organization to enable enhanced products and processes for our members. We provide data-driven insights to the delivery team so they can continuously improve the services they provide in the claims space.
Incumbent will be expected to be 'hands on' in the delivery of analytics services to our customer. The ideal candidate will have deep industry expertise, preferably in claims. However, a strong methodological tool kit is more important than specific substantive experience. This role is fundamentally designed to apply the most innovative analytic methods to drive genuine innovation. Previous management experience preferred but not required.

Supports USAA's strategic objectives by researching and testing innovations related to strategically defined focus areas. These positions are accountable for determining the feasibility and viability of innovation concepts to include early stage research, ideation, design, incubation, prototyping, piloting and developing a business case. Positions within this group are blends of entrepreneurs, marketers, technologists, strategists and business developers. These positions are ultimately accountable for determining the business need for innovation concepts and overseeing the project progress of those concepts from idea to implementation and post-implementation evaluation.

Job Requirements

  • Strategically leads an assigned group of Innovators.
  • Provides the team with guidance, technical training and identification of professional development opportunities to increase employee knowledge of process improvement and change management techniques and strengthen their ability to effectively manage projects of various scales.
  • Manages a project portfolio budget and allocates financial resources to innovation initiatives appropriately based on cost analysis findings.
  • Prioritizes innovation ideas meeting the criteria for consideration and assigns projects to team members based on scope, complexity and team member abilities.
  • Governs and manages the full project lifecycle of approved ideas and ensures identification and project team assignment of subject matter experts within the business communities.
  • Manages contract negotiations and supplier selection decisions.
  • Builds alliances and relationships with key stakeholders across the enterprise and pursues government contracts for additional funding when necessary.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required. 4 additional years of related experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted in lieu of a degree.
  • 8 or more years of industry experience directly related to current position.
  • Experience managing project teams and assigning accountabilities to team members required.
  • Experience in business case development, project coordination and working with enterprise teams to deliver project results required.
  • Experience with business research method, process engineering methods and change management initiatives required.
  • Experience gathering data for and completing Cost/Benefit Analyses required.
  • Demonstrated high on-the-job performance levels required. Broad company-specific and industry-specific knowledge.
  • Proven ability to build effective cross-functional relationships with employees of various levels throughout the organization.
  • Ability to effectively work with both internal and external partners on business development opportunities and teaming agreements.
  • Ability to conduct various quantitative and statistical analyses.

  • Advanced degree in statistics or Machine Learning, or related empirical field.
  • Experience with predictive models in R or Python; demonstrated record of analytics work being pushed into production.
  • Experience integrating diverse data types into a useable data set.  
  • Knowledge of unstructured data methodologies, particularly image and natural language/text.
  • Strong preference for deep knowledge of claims data.

***Selected candidates will attend and complete the Management Development School program in San Antonio, TX, during their first six months in position.***
