General Information

Basic Qualifications

USAA has some basic requirements for employment; all candidates must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • Be authorized to work in the United States
  • Applicants who accept a contingent offer of employment must satisfactorily meet all
requirements of the comprehensive background check, which includes drug testing
  • Complete an Employment Eligibility Verification I-9 form
  • Complete all job-related assessments

What experience is required?

USAA offers a variety of career opportunities based on your unique experience. We provide several options for starting a new career where USAA will provide you training “from the ground up.” These positions are in Claims Adjusting, Mortgage Servicing and Customer Service.

If you are new to the workforce or are considering starting a new career, please visit our career site and search using the following recommended keywords: “Claims”, “Associate”, and “Customer Service.”

Each of these careers has exciting career progression opportunities and includes paid training. When searching, consider placing your search item in quotation marks. Otherwise, you may receive too many results.

Background Checks

USAA conducts thorough background checks, typically going back at least 5 years. This can be dependent upon the job requirements.

Timeline

The length of each stage in the process is hard to accurately define as it varies per role and candidate. USAA knows the importance of timely communication and strives to ensure that the hiring process is as efficient and successful as possible.

Hiring Process

Apply

USAA accepts applications through our online Career Center. You will have the opportunity to set up a logon ID, create a profile, submit your resume, apply for the positions that interest you and build a job search agent. We encourage you to apply for a specific position due to the high volume of job seeker profiles we receive daily.

Applicant Screening

Qualified candidates will be notified via email with instructions for any employment assessments that are required for the job. If required, you should complete the assessment prior to the next step in the process.

Interviews

If you have received a follow-up email and have completed all the assessments, you may be selected to continue the process (not every candidate is selected for an interview). Once selected, our digital interview scheduling assistant will promptly send you a text message to arrange your interview. This initial step helps us assess your suitability for the position. If you're deemed a good fit, we'll then schedule a formal interview with one of our hiring team members.

Candidate Selection

After the formal interview, a hiring manager will review the feedback from interviewers and select an applicant for the position. Applicants who accept a contingent offer of employment must satisfactorily meet all requirements of the comprehensive background check.

Expert Resume & Interview Tips

Craft a Winning Resume: Tips to Stand Out

Your resume is your first chance to make a great impression on potential employers. To help you get noticed and showcase your strengths, we've put together essential tips that will make your resume shine. Follow these guidelines to highlight your skills, experiences, and achievements effectively.

  • Keep It Concise

Aim for a one-page resume if possible, especially if you have fewer than 10 years of experience. Use clear, concise language and avoid unnecessary details.

  • Tailor Your Resume

Customize your resume for each job application. Highlight the skills and experiences most relevant to the position you're applying for.

  • Highlight Achievements

Focus on your accomplishments rather than just listing job duties. Use quantifiable metrics to showcase your impact.

  • Include Keywords

Incorporate keywords from the job description into your resume. Many companies focus on skills related keywords to screen resumes.

  • Showcase Relevant Skills

List skills that are pertinent to the job you're applying for, including both hard skills (e.g., software proficiency) and soft skills (e.g., communication, teamwork).

  • Use Action Verbs

Begin each bullet point with strong action verbs like "led," "developed," "managed," or "implemented" to make your responsibilities and achievements stand out.

Nail Your Interview: Top Tips for Success

Your resume got you through the door, and now it’s time to impress in person. To help you make a lasting impact during your interview, we’ve compiled key tips that will boost your confidence and enhance your performance. Follow these guidelines to articulate your strengths and connect with your potential employer effectively.

  • Research the Company

Familiarize yourself with USAA’s mission, values, and recent news. Understanding the company culture and priorities will help you tailor your responses and show genuine interest.

  • Practice Common Questions

Prepare for common interview questions like “Tell me about yourself,” “What are your strengths and weaknesses?” and “Why do you want to work here?”

  • Use the STAR Method

Structure your answers to behavioral questions using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result). See video above for more info.

  • Prepare Questions

Have a few thoughtful questions ready to ask the interviewer. This demonstrates your interest in the role and helps you gather important information.

  • Dress Professionally

Choose professional attire that aligns with the company’s dress code. When in doubt, opt for business formal to make a positive first impression.

  • Follow Up

Send a thank-you email within 24 hours of your interview. Express appreciation for the opportunity, highlight key points from the conversation, and reiterate your interest in the role.
